Hidden Fall Hazards & Practical Fall Prevention Tips

Fall prevention isn’t just about railings, stairways, and grab bars. Our everyday routines can present some of the biggest fall risks, putting them in plain sight—and making them easy to overlook.

That’s probably why about 1 in 4 adults over 65 end up visiting the ER after falling (CDC).

The good news, however, is that most falls are preventable with awareness and action. To that end, here are some of the most ignored fall hazards at home and how to prevent them.

Pets & Fall RisksPets & Fall Risks

We love our furry companions—but they can unknowingly increase our risks of falling. That’s especially true when it comes to:

  • Pet toys and clutter: A stray chew toy, ball, or bone left on the floor can turn into a tripping hazard, particularly around stairs. So, always scan the floor before walking.
  • Food and water bowls: Bowls placed in doorways or walkways are easy to kick or cause spills and slips. So, place these bowls in a corner or tucked-away spot, rather than in the path of foot traffic.
  • Leashes and pet beds: Dangling leashes and soft beds can catch or trap your feet. So, always hang leashes up and keep beds out of main walkways.

Family tip: Encourage loved ones to do a quick “pet hazard check” each morning or evening.
This ~2-minute exercise can go a long way toward preventing an accident.

How Medications Cause Falls

Many prescription and over-the-counter medications can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or balance issues. This is especially true for certain medications and/or:

  • New prescriptions: Your body may react differently to a new drug, so avoid driving or walking alone until you know how it affects you.
  • Multiple medications: Taking 4 or more medications can increase fall risks significantly. If you’re taking multiple medications, be sure to schedule routine medication reviews and monitor any changes in your health (or balance).
  • Improper use: Adjusting doses without a doctor’s guidance or improperly taking a medication may also magnify side effects.

Family tip: Try to attend medical appointments with elderly loved ones.
A second set of ears can catch important details while building a stronger support system.

Everyday Clutter & Falls

Everyday Clutter & Falls

Clutter tends to build up slowly and blend into the background—until it causes a fall. This type of clutter and disarray can include:

  • Loose rugs: A rug corner can easily catch a foot or cane. So, use slip-resistant pads or remove rugs altogether.
  • Cords and wires: Power cords running across walkways can create easy trip points. Try to bundle and secure wires to keep them against the walls and out of any areas you walk around.
  • Stacks and piles: Newspapers, mail, boxes, and laundry baskets can block paths and make it challenging to get from point A to point B, especially in poorly lit areas. So, avoid letting clutter stack up and never keep items in main walkways or hallways..

Family tip: Make decluttering a family project and a routine.
A few hours of rearranging once or twice a year can make homes far safer while offering invaluable peace of mind.
